The number of patients seeking complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) either as stand-alone therapies or as a complement to conventional medical care (integrative care) is skyrocketing!
The latest survey by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the National Center for Health Statistics found that in the United States, approximately 38 percent of adults (about 4 in 10) and approximately 12 percent of children (about 1 in 9) are using some form of CAM or integrative care approach.
In response to this growing trend, many hospitals, managed care plans, and conventional practitioners are incorporating CAM therapies into their practices, and schools of medicine, nursing, and pharmacy are beginning to teach about CAM.
According to Ian Morrison, Ph.D., an internationally known author, consultant and futurist specializing in long-term forecasting and planning, “Smart hospital leaders will figure out how to integrate these services to broaden their appeal to a growing segment of patients who truly value these services (and often are prepared to pay out of pocket to secure them)…”
The increasing popularity of CAM and integrative care approaches is part of a much larger trend by consumers towards a Wellness lifestyle, which in turn has spurred the growth of Wellness tourism. Wellness tourism is travel for the purpose of promoting health and well-being through physical, psychological, or spiritual activities. It is a fast growing multibillion dollar businesses which represents the future of travel.
According to a 2013 Report by the Stanford Research Institute, Wellness tourism is already a US$439-billion market and is set to grow to US$678.5 billion by 2017. It is directly responsible for 11.7 million global jobs, which deliver US$1.3 trillion in global economic impact.
